Wellness programs to reduce stress




















EAPs and wellness programs can become hidden secrets. Try to use a lot of channels -- including town halls, corporate FAQs, external consultants and events -- to communicate the benefits of each program and how they will make them more effective.

Transparency is key. When communication is strong, engagement increases and your stress-management efforts are more effective. Your health and wellness program should be fluid and transforming.

You can do this by setting up feedback channels, including interviews and surveys, for employees to voice concerns and opinions.

Try to identify where challenges exist. Are programs difficult to understand? Is awareness an issue?

Ideally, these periodic check-ins can help stop burnout from happening—or at least prevent it from escalating—by allowing managers to proactively identify problems and implement solutions.

And perceived inequalities can cause feelings of frustration or despair for an employee who may already feel slighted. This style of management can easily contribute to mass burnout. Enabling employees to work to their strengths helps to keep them engaged, improves their productivity, and increases the likelihood they remain in your organization. Your corporate wellness program can also play an important role in helping employees reduce burnout.

A regular brisk walk will do. Any form of exercise is better than none, but outdoor exercise can be especially effective at reducing stress, especially during those endless dark winter months. Here are some tips for getting your employees outside and moving. Clearing your mind of stress is a skill that can be learned, however. One technique is called progressive muscle relaxation.

It involves systematically tensing and relaxing muscle groups while breathing in and out. The best thing about progressive muscle relaxation is that it is so easy to learn.

You can distribute step-by-step written instructions to your employees or provide links to instructional videos. A mounting body of evidence shows that mindfulness meditation can relieve stress and lessen anxiety and depression. Yoga has similar benefits. Your employees may not know how to start with meditation and other relaxation techniques. You can help them by bringing in instructors or offering access to webinars. Make sure the classes are aimed at all levels, so no one feels intimidated or excluded.

As workers jump from one intense task to the next without a moment to recharge, their stress levels creep toward critical mass. Even a few minutes to re-center before diving back into the fray can make a world of difference.
